This column series looks at the most significant data and analytics obstacles dealing with modern business and dives deep into effective use cases that can help other companies accelerate their AI development. Carolyn Geason-Beissel/MIT SMR Getty Images MIT SMR writers Thomas H. Davenport and Randy Bean see 5 AI trends to focus on in 2026: deflation of the AI bubble and subsequent hits to the economy; growth of the "factory" infrastructure for all-in AI adapters; higher concentrate on generative AI as an organizational resource rather than a specific one; continued development toward worth from agentic AI, despite the buzz; and continuous concerns around who should manage information and AI.

Role of AI in 2026 Market Growth

This implies that forecasting business adoption of AI is a bit simpler than anticipating technology change in this, our 3rd year of making AI forecasts. Neither of us is a computer or cognitive researcher, so we typically stay away from prognostication about AI innovation or the specific methods it will rot our brains (though we do expect that to be an ongoing phenomenon!).

We're also neither financial experts nor financial investment experts, but that won't stop us from making our very first prediction. Here are the emerging 2026 AI patterns that leaders should understand and be prepared to act upon. In 2015, the elephant in the AI room was the increase of agentic AI (and it's still clomping around; see below).

It's hard not to see the resemblances to today's circumstance, including the sky-high valuations of start-ups, the emphasis on user growth (remember "eyeballs"?) over earnings, the media buzz, the pricey infrastructure buildout, etcetera, etcetera. The AI market and the world at big would probably gain from a small, slow leakage in the bubble.

Becoming a Tech Hub in the Middle East

It won't take much for it to take place: a bad quarter for a crucial supplier, a Chinese AI design that's more affordable and just as reliable as U.S. models (as we saw with the very first DeepSeek "crash" in January 2025), or a couple of AI spending pullbacks by big corporate consumers.

Quantum computing has actually long felt like sci-fi. But scientists are getting in a "years, not decades" age where quantum machines will start dealing with problems classical computers can't, states Jason Zander, executive vice president of Microsoft Discovery and Quantum. That looming advancement, called quantum advantage, could help resolve society's hardest difficulties, Zander says.

AI finds patterns in information. And quantum includes a new layer that will drive far higher accuracy for modeling particles and products, he says.

AI or Manual Methods: the 2026 Guide

It's the first quantum chip constructed using topological qubits, a style that inherently makes vulnerable qubits more stable and trusted. It's likewise the only quantum option engineered to catch and correct errors. That architecture paves the method for machines with millions of qubits on a single chip, providing the processing power needed for complicated clinical and industrial issues.

A year in tech can feel like a years anywhere else. Believe about it: a year earlier, we were talking about how ChatGPT wasn't able to count the variety of "r"s in "strawberry." Reasoning models from Chinese frontier labs (like DeepSeek-R1) hadn't taken the world by storm, and neither had open-source reasoning agents.
